Needless to say, like all other moms, my weekday evenings are packed with things to do! Squeezing in a home made dinner is usually one of those activities. While I try to make take out or eating out an anomaly, I am always looking at wholesome one pot meals! This one stays special to me because it brings back memories of being a child!
Growing up surrounded by Rajasthani neighbors, I always got to taste their food when they all sat on the floor at sunset, shiny steel plates lined with equally shiny little steel bowls. Warm rotis, myriad vegetables cooked with extremely aromatic spices, kadhi, pickle, papad and chutney followed by rice or khichadi!
This dish takes me back or those childhood days when I was always warmly welcomed into my friends dining rooms, the amazing aromas of rice, rotis and lentils, steaming piles of fresh food and conversation! There could be nothing more comforting on a cold fall evening.
For the Dhokli -:
Wheat flour- 1 cup
Salt to taste
Ajwain- 1 tsp
Water to make a stiff dough
Oil – 1 tbsp
For the dal
Toor dal – 1 cup
Onion – 1 small
Tamarind- Size of a small lemon or Kokum
Mustard seeds – 1/ tsp
cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder – 1 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Cumin powder – 1 tsp
Salt – to taste
Chilli powder – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves a few
Coriander leaves a few
Soak tamarind in hot water and extract the pulp.
Cook the dal with 1 cup water in a pressure cooker until well done. Since I am at a higher altitude, I need to cook it up to 5 whistles, you may need less.
Add mustard seeds to hot oil in a pan. Once it crackles, add cumin seeds. Cook onions until they are translucent. Adding salt to the onions will help them cook faster.
Add tomatoes, salt, turmeric and all other dry spices and cook until the tomatoes leave the sides of the pan.
Add cooked dal and soaked tamarind pulp.Cook till you get rid of the raw tamarind smell.
Make a stiff sough with the flour, salt and water and roll out into thin rotis. Cut them into diamond shapes and add to the boiling dal. Cover and let the dough cook. Serve hot garnished with cilantro. Enjoy!
